Year 1 Home Learning

Virtual Science Week

Take this week to catch up with any learning that has been set that you haven't had the chance to complete yet.

Look at our virtual science week resources and decide with your family what you would like to do!

Go onto the Oxford Owl website – look on our school website for details of how to set up a parent account.  Your Read Write Inc books that were issued in your pack will signpost you to the correct Read Write Phonics book level for new reading.  Make sure that you work through these methodically so that you don’t miss out any sounds.

Continue to practise the sounds on the sounds sheet and see if you can use them in independent writing.

Play Buried Treasure on Phonics Play – guidance is below for how to access this.  Choose Phase 3 or Phase 4 when prompted.  Can you score 10 points by the end of the game?!

Read a book from home or an Oxford Owl ebook.  Talk to an adult about your favourite part.  What happens?  Why do you like it?

Read and follow the set of instructions to make the Easter chick. If you can’t print the chick template why not draw your own?

Choose a book and tell an adult how it could end differently.

Go on a 2D shape hunt around your home.  Make a list of how many squares, circles, triangles and rectangles you can see.  Can you find any hexagons or octagons?

Carry on practising counting in 2s, 5s and 10s.

Measure 10 things from around your home in centimetres.  Record your measurements, make sure you include your unit of measure – cms.

Write an information page about yourself and the people and animals who you live with.

Research and write some sentences about how animals and plants behave in Spring.

At the end of the week, write about one of the science activities that you chose.  What did you predict would happen?  What did you do to carry out the activity? Were you correct in your prediction?

Practise the first five spellings and write 3 sentences using a spelling word in each.

Practise the next five spellings and write 3 sentences using a spelling word in each.

Write some words using the set 2 and 3 sounds.

Please see separate Science Week suggestions.

Phonics Play

There is a username and password on the front page which will need to be entered.

Once you are logged in, click on the 'Resources' tab and this will take to you lots of blending and segmenting (breaking down words) games with which the children will be familiar from school.  'Buried Treasure', 'Dragon's Den' and 'Picnic on Pluto' (with a burping alien!) are particular favourites.  When you select a game it will prompt you to select which 'phase' of sounds you would like to use - EYFS children would be better to select Phase 2 whereas Year 1 children could select Phase 3 or Phase 4 and ultimately challenge themselves to explore Phase 5 which uses some of the more complex sounds.

Oxford Owl books

Lots of free ebooks that can be accessed, which follow our reading scheme and the Phonics scheme that we use in school.  You need to register for free as a parent but then can select the age of your child and the type of book that you are looking for, so it may be helpful to older KS2 siblings as well.

White Rose Maths

Week 1 is all based around the type of measure activities that we have covered in our learning in school where we worked on weight and capacity - the children can already use the correct mathematical vocabulary so please encourage them to do so if they are talking to you about different measures at home
