SMSC Guided Reading

SMSC Wider Curriculum

TPS Enrichment

Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development (SMSC)

At Thatcham Park, we place great importance on helping every child grow as a whole person. Our Christian vision — “encourage one another and build each other up” (1 Thessalonians 5:11) — shapes everything we do and supports all members of our school family to flourish.

SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development) is not taught as a separate subject. Instead, it is woven through everyday school life so that children develop a strong sense of who they are, how they relate to others and how they understand the world.

Spiritual Development

We use a simple model to help children develop spiritually:

  • In – understanding themselves, their thoughts and feelings
  • Out – building relationships and showing care for others
  • Up – exploring big questions about life, meaning and, for many, faith

Children are given regular opportunities to reflect, be still and think deeply. Through learning, worship and creative experiences, they develop curiosity, confidence and a sense of purpose.

Moral Development

Children learn to understand right and wrong and to take responsibility for their actions. Through discussion, stories and real-life situations, they are encouraged to think carefully, make good choices and show kindness, honesty and respect.

Social Development

We help children build positive relationships and feel part of a supportive community. They learn to work together, listen to others and contribute to school life through teamwork, pupil leadership and shared experiences.

Cultural Development

Children develop an understanding of the wider world by learning about different cultures, faiths and traditions. Through the curriculum, the arts, visits and events, they learn to appreciate diversity and celebrate what makes each community unique.

Courageous Advocacy

As a Church school, we encourage children to think about fairness and justice. They learn to recognise when something is not right and are supported to take action, for example through fundraising, community projects and environmental work. This helps them grow in confidence and understand how they can make a positive difference.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

SMSC development is also strengthened through:

  • collective worship and reflection
  • school trips and residential visits
  • partnerships with the local community
  • performances, celebrations and enrichment events
