Week 7

We would also like you to share the story ‘Albert and the Social Distancing’ which is below.  This story was written for young children by the minister of the Baptist Church in Newbury.  It is a lovely way of explaining the concept of social distancing and the reasoning behind it and has a nice drawing activity at the end of it.  We hope you enjoy it!

Phonics

Go onto the Oxford Owl website – see below for details of how to set up a parent account.  Your Read Write Inc books that were issued in your pack will signpost you to the correct Read Write Phonics book level for new reading.  Make sure that you work through these methodically so that you don’t miss out any sounds.

Continue to practise the sounds on the sounds sheet and see if you can use them in independent writing.  Practise blending your sounds by reading the alien words on the school website.

Play the Giggling Grapheme game on Phonics Play – see below for how to access this.  Choose Phase 3 when prompted.  Can you score 10 points by the end of the game?!  Play the game more than once this week – what will your highest score be?

Reading and Literacy

Read a book from home or an Oxford Owl ebook.  Talk to an adult about the bad character.  What do they do?  What do you like or dislike about them? Would you want to be their friend?

Dinosaur fact-file

Look on Purple Mash at your 2Dos.  Choose your favourite dinosaur and create a fact-file about it.  Remember to use the prompts to help you organise your ideas.

Fossils leaflet

Look on Purple Mash at your 2Dos.  What can you find out about fossils?  Can you put this information into a leaflet using the template on Purple Mash?  Remember, even though you are typing and not writing with a pencil, you do still need to use capital letters, finger spaces and full stops so that your writing makes sense.

Maths

Weight and Mass

Measure weight in standard units.

If you have scales at home, use them to measure and record the weights of different objects.  When you are recording, make sure that you include your unit of measure – this will be grams or ‘g’.  If you don’t have scales to use, look up and record the weights of different packets of food or other objects in your house and record them, remembering to include your unit of measure.

Carry on practising counting in 2s, 5s and 10s.  Which objects can you find around your home that can you help you do this? Can you represent your number bonds to 20 using part whole models – remember the total (20) goes in the main circle – “the body” and you put the 2 parts – the numbers that you add together to make 20 – one in each “leg”.

Comparing mass challenge cards

Look at the challenge cards and answer the questions.  There are some notes at the bottom for your grown up if you need help.  Think back to the learning that we did about measuring mass/weight in school, remember how the balance scales work when we compare weights – the heavier object goes down and the lighter one goes up.  If the scales are balanced, each side weighs the same.

Spellings

Practise the first five spellings and write 3 sentences using a spelling word in each.

Practise the next five spellings and write 3 sentences using a spelling word in each.

Write some words and sentences about the job you would like to do when you are a grown up using the set 2 and 3 sounds – you will find these on the sound mat on the school website.

Topic

History Skills

Choose an English King or Queen to research.  When did they rule?  Who were they married to?  Did they have any children?  Did they do anything especially interesting, good or bad?  Write some sentences –on paper or on a Purple Mash document – to tell us about them.

All About Me poster

Look on Purple Mash at your 2Dos.  Think about your own history and the facts about you which are important.  Make a poster on Purple Mash to share what you would like people to know about you.

Choose a sport to research.  Make a poster, powerpoint or fact-file about what you have found out.  Where did it start being played? What are the earliest records of it being played? Who are its important or most famous players? Can men and ladies both play it?  Does it appear in the Olympics?  What else can you find out?

White Rose Maths

Oxford Owl books

Lots of free ebooks that can be accessed, which follow our reading scheme and the Phonics scheme that we use in school.  You need to register for free as a parent but then can select the age of your child and the type of book that you are looking for, so it may be helpful to older KS2 siblings as well.

Phonics Play

There is a username and password on the front page which will need to be entered.

Once you are logged in, click on the 'Resources' tab and this will take to you lots of blending and segmenting (breaking down words) games with which the children will be familiar from school.  'Buried Treasure', 'Dragon's Den' and 'Picnic on Pluto' (with a burping alien!) are particular favourites.  When you select a game it will prompt you to select which 'phase' of sounds you would like to use - EYFS children would be better to select Phase 2 whereas Year 1 children could select Phase 3 or Phase 4 and ultimately challenge themselves to explore Phase 5 which uses some of the more complex sounds.

Week 7 Resources

RE

Watch ‘celebration Shabbat at the Synagogue.’

What is a Torah?

Where is it kept?

What does it look like?

Can you make a scroll?  You need 2 sticks and some paper and a piece of string. You could make a cover for it.

Week 6 Learning

Phonics

Go onto the Oxford Owl website – see below.

Play ‘Picnic on Pluto’ on Phonics Play – see below.  Choose Phase 3 or Phase 4 when prompted.  Can you score 10 points by the end of the game?!  Play the game more than once this week – what will your highest score be?

Reading and Literacy

Read a book from home or an Oxford Owl ebook.  Talk to an adult about your favourite character.  What do they do?  What do you like about them?

Find out the names of different rivers from around the world.  Choose one of these and research it.  Draw and write about where it is, what people use it for, what kind of creatures live in it and any other interesting facts that you find out.  Remember all your features of great writing – capital letters, finger spaces, full stops and really interesting vocabulary!  Please do not use the River Thames as there is another 2Do about this lower down in the grid.

Look on Purple Mash at your 2Dos.  In the ‘Geography of a River’ 2Do, look at the picture of the river and write a description of it.  Remember, we learned about Human and Physical geographical features in school.  Human features are ones which have been made by people, Physical features are parts of Nature.  Even though you are typing and not writing with a pencil, still remember those important features of great sentences.

Maths

Capacity

Find some containers in your home that look as though they have different capacities.  Remember, capacity is how much you can fit in – how much a container holds.  Use a small cup as a non-standard unit of measure.  How much water can you fit into each container?  Record your finding on the sheet.  If you can’t print the sheet at home, write out your own.  Remember to always include your unit of measure in your recording – eg, 6 cups.

Carry on practising counting in 2s, 5s and 10s.  Which objects can you find around your home that can you help you do this?  Ask an adult to play the Don’t Say 20! Game with you.  This is a game for 2 players.  1 player starts counting from any number less than 10.  On your turn you can choose to count 1, 2 or 3 numbers – if the 1st person counts “1, 2”, the next person might then count “3, 4, 5” and the 1st player would then count “6”.  Keep going, taking it in turns, but when you get to 19 YOU MUST NOT SAY 20!!  If you are really good at this you could try doing it to 50.

Do the quiz on the website with a partner (a grown up or a sibling). Talk about your answers for each question.  Once you have done this, complete the capacity worksheet where you have to draw the capacities onto the containers.  If you can’t print the worksheet, draw your own containers before showing their capacities.
