Weekly Themed activities

The Billy Goats Gruff

Look at the story of the 3 Billy Goats Gruff on the website.  What happens during the story?  Who is the bad character?  How do you know?  Who are the good characters?  What are they trying to do?  Use the pictures on the website – or draw your own! – to sequence the story of the 3 Billy Goats Gruff.

The troll and the 3 Billy Goats Gruff were not friends.

How can we help them make friends?  What would you tell them to do?  Write down or draw a picture of how they could become friends.

You could also make a ‘Wanted!’ poster about the troll.  Remember to include his picture, why he is bad, where he was last seen and how much the reward is that is offered for him.

Can you move like the different Billy Goats Gruff?

Little Billy Goat Gruff- very lightly on your feet/tiptoes.  Middle Billy Goat Gruff- normal movements.

Big Billy Goat Gruff-  stomp stomp stomp!  How would the troll move?

Can you find some instruments or pots and pans and make the sound that each of the billy goats and the troll would make on the bridge. Remember all 3 goats  went trip trap trip trap.

Run around outside like the characters in the story.  How do you feel now?  What happening to your heart?

Lie down and relax now.  How long can you keep still and relax?  What do you need to think about or do to relax?

Creative activities

Can you make a bridge for the goats to cross?  You could make it out of recycled junk or paper, bricks, Lego, sticks or anything that you think would work.

Find a toy (it doesn’t have to be a goat) and get them to trip trap across it!

The goats wanted to eat sweet smelling grass from the meadow.  The troll was stinky and smelly.  Can you use things from the garden or your house to make a sweet smelling potion or a stinky smelling one?  Remember it’s not for you to drink.  You just have to gently sniff it.  Also do check with an adult that you are allowed to use the different things that you choose before you put your potion together!

Use a paper plate for the face can you make a picture of the troll?  Think what colour you want him or her to be?  What sort of eyes, teeth or hair will you give him/her?  Does he/she have spots or warts?

If you want you could give make a body, arms and legs too.

Week 3 - Arts Week

Maths

Counting focus

Keep on practising counting forwards and backwards within 20.  Once you have done this, use your pack of number cards that you made a few weeks ago to pick a card and then use objects – pennies/toys/pieces of dry pasta etc – to represent the number and then identify and show ‘1 more’ and ‘1 less’.

Play a counting game with a partner.  Ask them to tell you a number on which to start and then count forwards or backwards from that point – this is to practise that we don’t always have to start on 0.  Then, choose  number for your partner to start on – listen carefully to their counting to make sure that they don’t make any mistakes!

Ask a partner – an adult or sibling – to count out 5 cubes/counters/pennies/small toys, check them carefully to make sure that there are definitely 5 there.  Ask you partner to cover the collection of 5 objects with a cloth and then add some more to them – they will need to show you how many they are adding before they put them under the cloth.  How many do you think you will have now?  Once you have done your adding, take the cloth away to see if you were right.  You can do this game with adding or taking away.

Phonics

Keep practising your Set 1 RWI sounds.  Your grown-ups might find the list on the school website of the different sounds useful.

This week’s sounds are l, h, r and j.  Have a look around your home or when you are out on a walk – which different objects that start with these sounds can you find?  Can you draw and label them with their name? Art Week activities

Can you look in the garden or if you are out and about and spot different birds.  What birds can you find?  What do they look like?  Which colour or size are they?  You could use the powerpoint about British birds that we have put on the website or look on this link -  Choose one of the birds that you have seen and draw or paint a picture of them.

If you can, go outside and collect leaves, sticks and grass.  Can you make a nest for a bird?  Can you then make a bird out of a stone or pine cone or even paper or junk modelling materials to go in your nest?

Follow the step by step instructions to draw an owl – work your way through and copy each stage of the pictures as you go.  Once you have drawn your owl you can choose to either colour, paint or collage it to look like a real owl or you could choose to make it brightly coloured and exotic!

Look at the picture of the Tick Bird from the Tinga Tinga Tales  below.  Can you draw your own version of this?  You could use pencils, paints, crayons or anything else that you would like.  We would love to see some of your creations!

Week Two

Odd and Even

Look at the PowerPoint about Osman and Eshal. - Join in with the game sorting out the items in their 2 paper bags.

As an extension (please see attachment) using the sheet and put a circle around the items that are odd and then the items that are even – you could colour code this so that it is really obvious!.

Set up a Teddy Bears’ Picnic with 4 plates of food - each plate needs to contain something different.

6 biscuits/five grapes/four segments of orange etc.

Have 2 bowls and 2 teddies who are having the picnic.

Choose 1 plate of food and share it out between the 2 teddies into their bowls. If the amount can be shared with none left over discuss with your child whether this number is odd or even.  Repeat with the other plates – how many odd amounts did you have and how many even?

Set up some pots of items containing different quantities of objects between 1 and 10 – these could be buttons, marbles, Lego, etc – ask your child to count the items in each pot and work out if it is odd or even? Sort these pots into 2 groups – odd and even.

As an extra activity – look at the worksheet with the Numicon pieces to cut out and sort onto odd and even mats.

Make a Healthy lunchbox - using the attached template of a lunchbox or draw your own - cut out the food you think is healthy. You could even draw your own food.

Look at the PowerPoint of Healthy or Unhealthy food.

Using the cut out food from the lunchbox activity to sort food into 2 groups. You might even come up with your own food you could draw or write for your 2 groups.

Creative activities

Paint or draw your favourite food. If you have playdough you could make your favourite food and see how many foods you can make from playdough that are healthy?  If you don’t have playdough you could make them out of junk modelling materials or paper!

Design a plate of healthy food - get a paper plate and make 3d food or draw your plate and draw the food you like on your plate. (See below if you need some ideas!).

Make a 3d or 2d ice cream - create a cone shape - use tissue paper or coloured paper to create your favourite flavour and decorate with sequins or glitter.

If you haven’t got the materials to do this, you could make a poster about Healthy Food to share with your family!

RE

Look at some gems.  Talk about what they look like.  Why might you like one of these?  How does it make you feel to look at them?

Read the story the Precious pearl for Nick Butterworth. Explain this is a story that a group of Christians listen to know how special it is to know God.

Tell someone what makes you happy or draw a picture and put it on tapestry for us all to see.

  • Do you know what precious means?
  • Do you know what a Pearl is?
  • Have a look at some precious jewels or gem stones or even pearls.
  • Which do you like best?
  • Why do you like that?
  • Imagine the most beautiful and special jewel you can imagine, what would you give to have it?

Watch the clip or read the story from a bible

In this story Jesus was trying to show that knowing God was like owning that pearl.

Christians believe that knowing God is like having the best jewel in the world and would make them so happy that they don’t need other things to make them happy.

What makes you happy? Is it something or knowing someone?

Week One

Maths

Halving

Look at the Halving Fruit Powerpoint below.  Follow the explanations and activities on each slide with an adult from home to explore the new concept of halving by sharing out.

Look at the sandcastle halving activity below.  Cut out the different objects and share them equally between the 2 sandcastles.  If you don’t have access to a printer you could draw your 2 sandcastles and then draw the objects onto it.  Make sure each sandcastle has the correct equal amount!

Find a collection of objects – toys, cars, playing cards, pencils etc – in your home.  Can you share them out fairly between you and a partner?  Use your counting skills to find out how many you have each got.

Also, please keep practising counting to 20, forwards and backwards.

Phonics

Keep practising your Set 1 RWI sounds.  Your grown-ups might find the list on the school website of the different sounds useful.

This week’s sounds are u, b, f and e.  Have a look around your home or when you are out on a walk – which different objects that start with these sounds can you find?  Can you draw and label them with their name? Mrs Willimas has pit the information about the Ruth Miskin Daily Phonics on Tapestry – you could also have a look at these.
