Earth Day

Throughout the school from foundation to year 6, we all spent some time celebrating and talking about Earth Day. The theme this year was ‘restore our planet.’ As a school we recognise how important it is to look after our planet and are keen to help restore our it in any ways we can therefore we all welcomed the chance to spend some extra time focusing on this. Here are some examples of what we have been focusing on. In Foundation they began looking at sea life and how they can they look after them and then introduced the term ‘recycling.’ Further up the school in year 3 we began talking about our carbon footprint. We learnt all about greenhouse gases and their impact on the environment. We then spent some talking thinking about how we can reduce our carbon footprints. The children decided on their own personal goal and were all very keen to help in their own way! In year 5 they moved on further to Earth Day - reported by Miss Pooles focus on plastic pollution. They were shocked to find out that 100 million sea creatures die each year as a result of plastic pollution! After finding this out they were keen to reduce this so began researching what can be recycled in West Berkshire. Finally, they made posters and letters to inform people in our local community about the impact of plastic! Finally, in year 6 they also looked at carbon footprints but took it a step further and calculated their family’s carbon footprint. They then had some great discussions about greenhouse gases and ways to reduce this. Earth Day was a very important reminder to all of us about how precious our Earth is and that we need to work together to save it!

In KS1 we have had lots of fun this week thinking about our wonderful planet and everything that it does for us. We decided to re-use some plastic bottles and transform them into something that benefits the KS1 environment. First, we collected twigs and sticks from the field and filled half of our bottle to create a fantastic bug hotel! Then, we used the other half of the bottle to plant and grow some cress. We even drew silly faces on them!
